This specimen was lot 22180 in Heritage sale 61352 (Dallas, December 2023), where it sold for $870. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XVI gold Louis d'Or 1788-AA AU58 NGC, Metz mint. A comparatively low-mintage issue produced in Metz, uncommon when located with this much appeal." The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer. The final date for Metz is 1790. The mint closed in 1799.

Recorded mintage: 72,826, a better date.

Specification: 7.65 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 881, Dr/2 № 605, Fr-475, KM 591.2, Gad-361.
