Saxony 1679-CF thaler Dav-7627

Sincona sale 11, lot 983

This specimen was lot 983 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 3,400 CHF (about US$4,209 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen, Kurfürstentum, Albertiner Johann Georg II. 1656-1680. Taler 1679, Dresden. Hksp. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Electorate of Saxony, John George II (1656-80), thaler of 1679, Dresden mint. Mount mark, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This coin was issued by the elector of Saxony in 1678-80 but is scarce.
