Künker sale 336, lot 7163

This specimen was lot 7163 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$3,926 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GERMAN COINS SINCE 1871, REICHSGOLDMÜNZEN, BADEN Friedrich I. 1852-1907. 10 Mark 1902. Seltener Jahrgang. Polierte Platte. (Germany, grand duke of Baden, Frederick I, 1852-1907, ten mark of 1902. Rare date, proof.)"

Altho Baden was not a major issuer of coins prior to unification, its issues during the Empire (1871-1918) were substantial. This is the only scarce date of a type struck 1902-07. This older bust of the grand duke also appears on two mark (KM 278) and five mark (KM 274).

Recorded mintage: 30,409 plus proofs.

Specification: 3.98 g, 0.900 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM 275, J. 190.
