Sincona sale 51, lot 2286

This specimen was lot 2286 in Sincona sale 51 (Zurich, October 2018), where it sold for 1,600 CHF (about US$1,930 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Christian V. 1670-1699. 1/2 Dukat 1694, Kopenhagen. Münzmeister Christian Wineke. Stempelschneider Anton Meybusch. Sehr selten. Gutes sehr schön. (Denmark, Christian V, 1670-99, half ducat of 1694, Copenhagen mint. Mintmaster Christian Wineke, engraver Anton Meybusch. Very rare, Good very fine.)"

This type was struck 1694 and 1696 and is rare. It was struck using quarter ducat dies of KM 436. The "·P·&·I·" on the reverse is not a mintmark but the king's motto, "PIETATE ET IVSTITIA".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.74 g, .979 fine gold, this specimen 1.73 g.

Catalog reference: KM-437; Hede 44. Fr-161.
