from the Stack's Bowers February 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 10147
SB225-10147r.jpg

This specimen was lot 10147 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €660 (about US$688). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 16 Skilling, 1624. Christian IV. NGC AU-53. From the L. E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922)." This type was struck 1624-25 and was the first issue of the denomination. Throughout the sixteenth century, one speciedaler was 96 skilling; at some point in the 1620's, it was raised to 144 skilling. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648) had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.93 g, 0.859 fine silver, 22.2 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-92; Hede-131; Sieg-69; Schou-81; AH-23.15.1; Bruun-5408.
