This two reales was issued by the Segovia mint in Spain during the reign of Philip IV. This well struck, nicely centered coin may be contrasted with the crude cobs being minted at the Latin American mints, where screw presses were not installed until the 18th century. The type was struck at Segovia 1627-29 and 1652-59 as well as at Toledo. Two reales cobs were minted at Seville and Madrid during this period. The first specimen was lot 23080 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $399.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 2 Reales, 1628-P. Segovia Mint. Philip IV (1621-65). NGC MS-63. A stunning example with even stony gray tone and attractive underlying luster." The second specimen was lot 2346 in Ponterio sale 146.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver, .201 troy oz ASW.
