Sincona sale 95, lot 4317

This specimen was lot 4317 in Sincona sale 95 (Zurich, October 2024), where it sold for 140 CHF (about US$194 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Luzern, Stadt und Kanton, 20 Kreuzer 1714, Luzern. Rückseitenumschrift getrennt durch vierblättrige Blüten. Sehr schön. (Switzerland, canton of Luzern, twenty kreuzer of 1714, Luzern mint. Reverse inscription punctuated by four-petalled rosettes. Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1713-14 and 1724-25. In 1714, the canton made an extensive issue of coins, from a half batzen up to ten ducats. The convention thaler, which superseded the reichs thaler in the 1740's, was worth 120 kreuzer or two gulden.

Record mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.6 g, silver, 26.5 mm diameter, this specimen 4.24 g.

Catalog reference: KM 44, Wielandt (Luzern) 152 var, D.T. 552b, HMZ 2-655b.
