Sincona sale 95, lot 4318

This specimen was lot 4318 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 750 CHF (about US$1,040 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Luzern, Stadt und Kanton, 20 Kreuzer 1724, Luzern. Verwendung eines Rückseitenstempels von 1714, bei dem die zweitletzte Ziffer 1 in ein Z (für 17Z4) umgeschnitten wurde. Selten. Fast sehr schön. Kleines Zainende. (Switzerland, canton of Luzern, twenty kreuzer of 1724, Luzern mint. The reverse die was recycled from 1714 by cutting the "1" into a "Z". Rare, About Very Fine, Minor edge clip.)"

This type was struck 1713-14 and 1724-25. In 1714, the canton made an extensive issue of coins, from a half batzen up to ten ducats. The convention thaler, which superseded the reichs thaler in the 1740's, was worth 120 kreuzer or two gulden.
