Sincona sale 91, lot 3166

This specimen was lot 3166 in Sincona sale 91 (Zurich, May 2024), where it sold for 30,000 CHF (about US$39,942 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, 6 Dukaten 1796, Bern. Gekröntes Stadtwappen in kleinem Lorbeerkranz. Rv. Wertangabe mit Jahreszahl in einem Lorbeerkranz. Sehr selten. Fast FDC. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (Switzerland, canton of Bern, six ducats of 1796, Bern mint. Obverse: crowned city arms in a small laurel wreath; reverse: value and date in a laurel wreath. Very rare, About uncirculated, Magnificent condition.)"

The canton of Bern was invaded and occupied by revolutionary French armies in 1794. This rare coin accompanied a double ducat (Fr-179), quadruple ducat (Fr-177) and eight ducats (Fr-174). We don't know the occasion for its issue.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 20.94 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 20.74 g.
