Künker sale 293, lot 695

This specimen was lot 695 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,291 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, HERZOGTUM Georg II. 1727-1760. Reichstaler 1752, Zellerfeld. Ausbeute der Grube Regenbogen. Kl. Randfehler, hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg, George II, 1727-60, mining thaler of 1752, Zellerfeld mint, for the Rainbow mine. Edge bumps, beautiful toning, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This very scarce type is listed for 1745, 1748-49 and 1752. Other thalers for 1752 include Dav-2089, -2097, -2098, -2099, -2102 and -2103. The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866.
