Bolivia 1829-PTS JM sol

Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72453

This specimen was lot 72453 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $432. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Sol, 1829-PTS JM. Potosi Mint. PCGS MS-64. Surpassed in the PCGS census by just one example, this near-Gem stunner offers appealing almond-gray toning along with exceptional underlying brilliance." This is the most common date of the three year type (1827-29) but it still seldom seen. The 1830 issue (KM 94a), which was only 0.667 fine, was struck with a frozen date until the 1850's. The debased coin flooded Bolivia's neighbors, arousing loud protests to no avail.
