This type, the size of a half dime, was struck in Lisbon 1874-80 and 1886-89. It superseded a similar type (KM 506.1) with a slightly smaller diameter. King Luis ruled 1861-89. There was one issue of a silver fifty réis during the reign of Carlos (KM 536) after which the coin was converted to copper-nickel.
Recorded mintage: 100,000.
Specification: 1.25 g, 0.917 fine silver, .036 oz ASW, 15.5 mm diameter.
