Stack's Bowers May 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 32658

This specimen was lot 32658 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 50 Reis, 1875. Lisbon Mint. Luis I. PCGS MS-62. An attractive example with iridescent toning and an almost prooflike nature when cradled in hand." This type, the size of a half dime, was struck in Lisbon 1874-80 and 1886-89. It superseded a similar type (KM 506.1) with a slightly smaller diameter. King Luis ruled 1861-89. There was one issue of a silver fifty réis during the reign of Carlos (KM 536) after which the coin was converted to copper-nickel.

Recorded mintage: unknown but the best date.

Specification: 1.25 g, 0.917 fine silver, 15.5 mm diameter.
