Sincona sale 5, lot 33

This specimen was lot 33 in Sincona sale 5 (Zurich, May 2012), where it sold for 28,000 CHF (about US$34,454 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Basel, Doppeltaler 1621. Av. Von zwei Basilisken flankierter Baselstab in einfachem spanischem Wappenschild. In der Umschrift oben die Jahreszahl. Rv. Nach links blickender, auffliegender Adler. Äusserst selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Switzerland, city of Basel, double thaler of 1621. Obverse: two basilisks support the city arms, date above; reverse: an eagle displayed, facing left. Of the highest rarity, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This is the only double thaler struck by the city of Basel in the seventeenth century. This is the rarer of several varieties.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: silver; this specimen is 56,60 g.
