This specimen was lot 4761 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €420 (about US$543 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Anselm Franz von Ingelheim, 1679-1695. 1/12 Taler 1689, GFS, Erfurt. Winz. Justierspuren, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Auktion Kricheldorf 16, Stuttgart 1966, Nr. 751. (archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Francis of Ingelheim, 1679-95, one twelfth thaler of 1689, Erfurt mint. Minor adjustment marks, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This type was struck at Erfurt 1689-92. Mainz was occupied by the French army in 1688 which was besieged by imperial forces in 1689. The siege and resulting evacuation by the French (taking everything with them not nailed down) ruined a town already in decline.
