Eliasberg lot 1105

This specimen was lot 1105 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $977.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "1696 4,000 reis. Bahia mint. EF-45 (NGC). Arms topped with wide crown, legends and denomination around/plain cross in quadralobe within circle, legends and date around. Medium gold, good eye appeal for the grade. A desirable early piece from Brazil. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type was struck 1696-98 and is among the first products of the Brazilian mints. Large mintages came later, with the discovery of gold in the Minas Gerais.
