Brazil 1696 2000 reis
This specimen was lot 23162 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $12,925. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II gold 2000 Reis 1696(B), AU Details NGC, surface hairlines. This coin has some partial luster (!). Details on the 'mini-shields' on the obverse are very sharp. 17th century 2000 Reis is a very difficult denomination to find with only 3 years of issue and with much of the gold coming in being struck as 4000 Reis (or Moeda). From The RLM Collection." This type was struck 1696-97 only and is among the first products of the Brazilian mints. Large mintages came later, with the discovery of gold in the Minas Gerais.
