This specimen was lot 27452 in Heritage sale 3031 (Dallas, January 2014), where it sold for $528.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II gold 4000 Reis 1697, VF/XF, ex-jewelry with a mount visible at 12:00. A scarce early Brazilian gold coin with strong detail and clear legends." This type was struck 1696-98 and is among the first products of the Brazilian mints. Large mintages came later, with the discovery of gold in the Minas Gerais.
