Heritage sale 3024, lot 23165

This specimen was lot 23165 in Heritage sale 3023 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $4,406.25. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Pedro II gold 4000 Reis 1698/7(B), AU Details NGC, surface hairlines. RLM grade S/. Deep orange with hints of red peripheral toning. Clearly a 8 over 7 date. A choice obverse with almost all 5 mini-shields complete. The scarcest date of this short-lived type. From The RLM Collection." This type was struck 1696-98 and is among the first products of the Brazilian mints. Large mintages came later, with the discovery of gold in the Minas Gerais.
