Brazil 1695 4000 reis
This specimen was lot 23161 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $5,287.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II gold 4000 Reis 1695(B), XF Details NGC, surface hairlines. With the establishment of the Bahia mint in 1694, gold coin production began in 1695 and the striking of 2000 and 4000 Reis. Essentially, this is the first Portuguese colonial gold struck in their American territory. Featuring a 'large' crown, which makes the coin a one-year type, the scarce specimen is lightly cleaned and somewhat re-toned. Strong features, including date and legends. From The RLM Collection." This type was struck 1695 only and is among the first products of the Brazilian mints. Large mintages came later, with the discovery of gold in the Minas Gerais.
