Mexico SB1019-72478r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72478 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1879-As DL. Alamos Mint. PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield. As close as one can possibly get to a Mint State designation, this attractive piece exhibits the slightest degree of gentle handling while possessing a good deal of alluring toning. From the Sonoran Sunset Collection." The Alamos mint struck eight reales 1864-95. Many of the early dates are rare but the 1879-A is merely sightly scarce. Assayer DL was active 1866-71, 1874-79.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
