Áureo y Calicó sale 346, lot 801

This specimen was lot 801 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"1723. Portugal. Juan V. (Lisboa). 4 escudos. AU. Raspadura en anverso. Muy rara. MBC+. (kingdom of Portugal, John V, four escudos of 1723. Scratches on obverse, very rare, choice very fine.)"

This type was the 6400 réis or "joe" struck in large quantities in Portugal and Brazil in the eighteenth century. The early dates (1723-32) are priced about double the later dates (1735-50).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.34 g, 0.917 fine gold, .421 troy oz AGW, this specimen 14,27 g.
