This specimen was lot 72320 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Crown, ND (1644-45). London Mint: mm: (R). Charles I (in name only). NGC EF-45. Struck under Parliament. Obverse: Charles, holding sword and reins, on horse trotting left; Reverse: Garnished oval coat-of-arms. Somewhat irregularly shaped as is often the case, this lightly handled example from a fraught period offers an enchanting overall appearance." Half crowns were struck in numerous varieties, some dated, some with round shields, some with oval shields and many variations in scrollwork. None of these are photographed in the SCWC. Up until the time the king was tried and executed, Parliament continued to use pre-Civil War designs on the coinage produced at the Tower mint. When milled coinage was introduced in the 1670's, much of the hammered coin was called in and melted.
