This specimen was issued by the Maldives as part of the F.A.O. series. It was accompanied by a five rufiyaa featuring a lobster. The Maldives are an island group in the Indian Ocean; they were a protectorate of Britain 1887-1968. The natives make their living by fishing. This type was offered in .500 fine silver (shown here) and sterling silver (KM 58a) and gold (KM 58b).

Recorded mintage: 7,140 uncirculated strikes plus 2,000 silver proofs and 200 in gold.

Specification: 28.05 g, .500 fine silver, .450 troy oz ASW (same standard as a 1930's British crown).
