This specimen was lot 2388 in Goldberg sale 91 (Los Angeles, June 2016), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[1] noted, "Maldive Islands. 1000 Rufiyaa, 1990 NGC PF68 UC. 25 Years of Independence. Mintage 1,000. NGC graded Proof 68 Ultra Cameo." This specimen was followed in 1993 by another commemorating 25 years of the republic. The Maldives are an island group in the Indian Ocean; they were a protectorate of Britain 1887-1968. The natives make their living by fishing. This type was struck to the standard of a British double sovereign.
