This specimen was lot 41127 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $2,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "MALDIVES. 100 Rufiyaa, AH 1405//1985. NGC PROOF-68 Ultra Cameo. Rather dazzling and brilliant, this example celebrates the opening of the Grand Mosque and Islamic Centre." The Maldives are an island group in the Indian Ocean; they were a protectorate of Britain 1887-1968. The natives make their living by fishing. Global climate change, with its accompanying sea level rise, has made many Maldivians fear for the future of their homes. This design was also used to strike a silver crown-sized 100 rufiyaa (KM 78).
