This specimen was lot 30237 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $1,260. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. Taler, 1711-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg Ludwig (future George I of Great Britain). PCGS MS-61. A charming and rather elegant survivor of the series, this represents the final date for this specific type, with charming light gray toning across the surfaces and some minty brilliance emanating from the areas that the devices have allowed to remain protected. A great Mint State exemplar. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This "wild man" thaler, one of many from this state, was struck 1700-1711 (the 1700 issue is Dav-6653). It is fairly common. A mining thaler with St. Andrew on the reverse (Dav-2063) was also struck in 1711. George Ludwig was promoted to king of England on the death of his cousin Anne Stuart in 1714. This is the period when the electorate ceased to be known as Brunswick-Luneburg and called Hannover instead.
