The first specimen was lot 12223 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[3] noted, "FRANCE. 40 Franc, 1818-W. Lille Mint. PCGS MS-62." Over half of all Louis XVIII forty francs produced are of this date.

Recorded mintage: 352,494[2] (most common date).

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz.
