This specimen was lot 1074 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €500 (about US$624 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis XVIII, seconde restauration (1815-1824), AV 40 francs, 1818 A, Paris. Fines traces d'ajustage et petits coups sur la tranche. Très Beau à Superbe. (France, Louis XVIII, second restoration (1815-24), gold forty francs of 1818, Paris mint. Fine adjustment marks and small rim nicks. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

In a turnabout from the usual preponderance, the 1818-W is the most common date while the 1818-A is scarce. The type is listed for 1816-24.
