Jean Elsen sale 143, lot 1703

This specimen was lot 1703 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €185 (about US$242 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis XVIII, seconde restauration (1815-1824), AR 1/2 franc, 1818W, Lille. Rare. Très Beau/Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XVIII, second restoration, 1815-24, silver half franc of 1818. Lille mint, rare, Very Fine/Extremely Fine.)"

This dime-sized coin was struck at Paris under the régime of king Louis XVIII (1814-24). It is a middle date of a type struck 1816-24. All half francs of this reign are of this type, which is fairly common. It was demonetized in 1869. The catalog[2] notes 52 dates for the type, some very rare. This date is scarce.

Reported Mintage: 7,805[2], a scarce date.

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Auguste-François Michaut.
