Sincona sale 33, lot 2613

This specimen was lot 2613 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE | Königreich. Louis XVIII. 1814-1824 5 Francs 1818. B Rouen Sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XVIII, 1814-24, five francs of 1818, Rouen mint, very fine.)"

This issue, from the Rouen mint, is a common date of a type struck 1816-24. This type succeeded the uniformed bust type of the first restoration, struck 1814-15. It was demonetized in 1928. A complete set of this type comprises 96 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. The entire production run, 1816-24, totaled about 104 million pieces. This date is priced[1] about 60% higher than the common date (1824A or 1824W).

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879. This specimen 24.85 g.

Mintage: 2,188,573[1].
