Sincona sale 73, lot 1216

This specimen was lot 1216 in Sincona sale 73 (Zurich, November 2021), where it sold for 425 CHF (about US$547 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE | Kingdom. Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Ecu de Béarn à la mèche longue 1653, Pau. Sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, écu of Béarn of the long lock of 1653, Pau mint. Very fine.)"

The specimen shown is an écu de France et du Béarn à la mèche longue struck in Pau and Morlaàs during the reign of Louis XIV. This coin is a typical product of these mints in Béarn, where crude diework and bad strikes predominated. The reverse shows the arms of France impaled with the arms of Navarre and Béarn. The two mints struck this type 1650-62; the "**F**" is not a mintmark but the initial of the mintmaster.
