This specimen was lot 40133 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1761-J 2 Escudos. Popayán mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-55 (PCGS). Light yellow gold with some remaining luster in protected areas. Choice and problem free. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Spink America's sale of the Norweb Collection, March 1997, lot 313." This specimen is one of a series struck 1760-71 at the Popayán mint, which never adopted the "rat nose" bust used at Bogotá after 1762. While the two escudos is a rare denomination for Mexico, it is common for the Colombian mints.
