Eliasberg lot 3528

This coin was minted in Cuzco, Peru, in 1826. This specimen was lot 3528 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $3,450. The catalog description^[1] noted, "1826 GM 8 escudos. Cuzco mint. MS-62 (NGC). Standing Liberty with pole and cap, shield, legends around/crowned arms with furled flags, legends around, date below. Medium yellow gold with slight reflectivity in the fields, most notable on the reverse. Minor planchet flaws are noted atop the reverse. A beautiful example of the first gold coin of independent Peru. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

This type was struck at Cuzco 1826-45 and at Lima 1826-40 and 1850-55. This is one of the more available dates.
