The gold libra superseded the silver sol as Peru's main unit of currency in 1898. The libra weighed the same as a British sovereign and equalled ten soles. The type was struck until 1930 and again 1959-69, along with 1/5 libras and 1/2 libras. This example was lot 28882 on Jan 11 2011 and sold for $360 at the 2011 January World & Ancient coins Non-Floor Session #3013 by Heritage Auctions. The catalog description reads: "Republic gold Libra 1966, MS66 ANACS, a virtually flawless example."

Recorded mintage: 39,000.

Specification: 7.98 g, 0.917 fine gold, 0.2354 troy oz AGW, reeded edge.
