This specimen was lot 72348 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1877-Pi MH. San Luis Potosi Mint. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. Though struck from slightly worn dies, this nearly choice specimen dazzles with great cartwheel brilliance and features a soft argent nature accentuated by some olive hints." In 1873, the Mexican government, facing rejection of its balance scale peso in its main export market of Asia, resumed the production of cap-and-ray eight reales. This late period of 1873-97 saw large mintages and few rarities. This date is common but the 1877/6 overdate is rare. Assayer MH is listed for 1873-79.
Recorded mintage: 1,018,000.
Specification: 27.07 g, .903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
