This specimen was lot 4726 in Goldberg sale 74 (Los Angeles, June 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Crown, 1898. Victoria. LXI regnal edge year. Old Head Crown. Featuring an obverse portrait by Thomas Brock and Pistrucci's reverse St George design, this is the rarest date and edge type of the 16 different 'Old Head' Crown varieties. Nicely struck, mint state with a light olive green and gold toning this is a great example of the key date. NGC graded MS-62." The edge letted "ANNO LXI" is listed as scarcer than the edge lettered "ANNO LXVII." The type was struck 1893-1900 in some numbers but is rather expensive in nice condition. A crown was worth five shillings or sixty pence.
Recorded mintage: 161,000.
Specification: 28.27 g, .925 fine silver, .840 troy oz ASW.
