Great Britain 1898 sovereign
This specimen was lot 29948 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "Victoria gold Sovereign 1898 MS65 NGC, Royal mint. Despite being a relatively common date in lower grades, this Gem is an absolute conditional rarity with its virtually flawless, silky surfaces and impressively bold devices. Presently tied for the finest-known certified example of this date with none graded finer, previous sales records confirm that this deluxe offering is absolutely worthy of a premium bid." This type was struck 1893-1901 in considerable numbers. This "old bust" is the most familiar and most common of Victoria's sovereigns.
