This specimen was lot 72535 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, 1898. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-64 Red Brown Gold Shield. A vibrant near Gem from the final years of Victoria's reign, this specimen abounds with a delightful red-brown nature." This penny was struck 1893-1901 in large numbers. Varieties exist in the height of the sea level.
Recorded mintage: 20,757,000 plus proofs.
