Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1140

This specimen was lot 1140 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,710 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV demi-louis d'or à l'écu, 1693I, Limoges. 1e réformation. D/ T. vieillie à d., coiffée d'une perruque laurée. R/ Ecu de France couronné. De la plus haute rareté Réformé sur un demi-louis d'or au buste juvénile de Paris. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold half louis of the shield of 1693, Limoges mint, first reformation. obverse: laureate, peruked old head to right; reverse: crowned arms of France. Extremely rare, struck over a half louis juvenile of the Paris mint. Very Fine.)"

This type, known as a demi-louis d'or à l'écu, was struck 1690-93, mostly over older coins. Many mints contributed but all in small quantities and the type is rare today. This is a previously unconfirmed date. The Limoges mint is recorded as having struck a few demi-louis d'or aux 4 L in 1693.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.37 g, .917 fine gold, 20-21 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 3,33 g.
