Stack's Bowers ANA sale, lot 624
Sta ANA-624r.jpg

This specimen was lot 624 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 20 Franc, 1815-L. Bayonne Mint. NGC AU-50. Hundred Days." This issue of the "Hundred Days" (Napoleon's return from Elba to his final defeat at Waterloo) is not rare but brings a premium because of its historical associations. Paris and Lille also struck this type in 1815.

Recorded mintage: 18,278 plus 54,444 for Louis XVIII.

Specification: 6.45 g, .900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier.

Catalog reference: Fr-523; KM-705.2; Gad-1025a, F.516A/2.
