This specimen was lot 775 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €270 (about US$342 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu aux huit L, 1690A, Paris. 1er type. 1e réformation. D/ B. dr. à d. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnés de quatre lis. Réformé sur un écu au buste juvénile de 1669. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), silver écu of the eight "L's" of 1690, Paris mint, first type, first reformation. Obverse: draped bust to right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned "L's" with four fleurs-de-lys in the fields. Struck over an écu of 1669, Very fine.)"
This type was struck 1690-93 and is the first reasonably common type after the scarce dates of the 1670's and 1680's. Gadoury notes this mint as common.
Recorded mintage: 2,409,256 on new blanks plus an unknown but large number struck over previous types.
Specification: 27.45 g, .917 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, lettered edge; this specimen is 26,81 g.
