This specimen was lot 20399 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1690-9. Rennes Mint. Louis XIV (1643-1715). NGC MS-63. An écu aux 8 L from the first reformation of 1690 to 1693. Reformations (a form of capital levy) occurred again in 1693, 1701 and 1704. This date is notable for having an upside-down mintmark ("6" vs "9") but is not otherwise scarce. This example, struck from eroded dies, is quite the anomaly in terms of preservation however, with sparkling luster over nearly brilliant surfaces and strong detail within the designs. Only the slightest traces of undertype are visible. Undeniably a world-class survivor." This type was struck 1690-93 and is the first reasonably common type after the scarce dates of the 1670's and 1680's. Gadoury notes this mint as common.
Recorded mintage: 75,748 fn + 1,260,922 rf, a fairly common date.
Specification: 27.45 g, .917 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.
