The first specimen was lot 313 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $3,327.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE, Premier République. Convention nationale. 1792-1795. Proof Æ Essai du sol aux balances. Paris mint. By Augustin Dupré. Dually dated 1793 A and L’An 2. In NGC encapsulation graded PF 65. Very rare. Superb lustrous proof with hints of moderate patina. Only coin of this date ever graded and considered a prototype by Gadoury. Purchased from Joe Lepzyck (a really nice man and missed)."
The second specimen was lot 43185 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[2] noted,
"FRANCE. National Convention. Copper Sol Essai (Pattern), Year II/1793-A. Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63 Brown. By A. Dupré. Fairly RARE and exceedingly attractive, this Choice specimen is undoubtedly among the finest known, offering a sharp, well executed strike, majestic lustrous brilliance, and warm red-brown surfaces throughout. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Émile Bourgey in Paris in September 1961)."
The third specimen was lot 43186 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[2] noted,
"FRANCE. National Convention. Bell Metal Sol Essai (Pattern), Year II/1793-A. Paris Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details. By A. Dupré. Very crisply and sharply struck, this magnificent pattern issue does exhibit some noted minor cleaning, but otherwise stands without wear and retains a pale bronze hue and much lustrous brilliance. A RARE and impressive rendition of the type. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from the Farouk Collection in March 1954). Ex: Palace Collections of Egypt [King Farouk] (Sotheby's - 3/1954) Lot # 2175 (part of)."
The fourth specimen was lot 43187 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[2] noted,
"FRANCE. National Convention. Copper Sol Essai (Pattern), Year II/1793-A. Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-64. Plain edge. By A. Dupré. Struck upon a somewhat thicker planchet than normal, this near-Gem offers exceptional overall quality, with a sharp strike, pleasing brilliance, and alluring olive-yellow hues throughout. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Glendining on 26 June 1970). Ex: Glendining (6/1970) Lot # 623."
This coin was minted at Paris during the throes of the Revolution. 1793 was the year the king was tried and executed. Amid the chaos, large quantities of these copper sols were issued, along with half and two sols. The 1791-93 issues bear the bust of the king but his ouster forced the removal of his portrait. The obverse shows the tablet of the law with the motto, "LES HOMMES SONT EGAUX DEVANT LA LOI," (all men are equal before the law) and the reverse shows the balance scales of justice. This type was hurriedly and crudely made and is rarely found better than VG.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: bronze or brass, 12.23 g, 29 mm diameter. The first specimen is Ø28 mm, 11.74 g, 6h axis;, the second specimen 11.80 g; the thrid specimen 11.27 g, the fourth specimen 16.98 g.
Catalog reference: Guilloteau 415; Mazzard 294; KM 619.1, Gad-19. The second specimen is Maz-289 (bell metal; R1). The fourth specimen is Maz-291.
