Bavaria 1873-D 20 mark
This specimen was lot 2292 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$408 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Bayern, Königreich, Ludwig II. 1864-1886 20 Mark 1873. München Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany kingdom of Bavaria, Louis II (1864-86), twenty mark of 1873, Munich mint, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This type is noted for 1872-73, after which the reverse was modified (KM 900). King Ludwig II ruled until 1886, when he was deposed in favor of his brother. Disliked for his extravagance and his homosexuality, he died soon after under very mysterious circumstances.
Recorded mintage: 2,770,062 plus a few proofs.
