Bavaria 1876-D 20 mark
This specimen was lot 949 in Jean Elsen sale 111 (Brussels, December 2011), where it sold for €470 (about US$723 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, BAVIERE, Ludwig II (1864-1886), AV 20 Mark, 1876 D, Rare. Très Beau à Superbe. (Germany, Bavaria, Louis II (1864-86), gold twenty mark of 1876, rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This type is noted for 1874-78, after which none were issued until 1895. King Ludwig II ruled until 1886, when he was deposed in favor of his brother. Disliked for his extravagance and his homosexuality, he died soon after under very mysterious circumstances.
