Sincona sale 46, lot 257

This specimen was lot 257 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$480 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Bayern, Königreich, Ludwig II. 1864-1886. 20 Mark 1874 D, München. Vorzüglich. (kingdom of Bavaria, Louis II, 1864-86, twenty mark of 1874, Munich mint. Extremely fine.)"

King Ludwig II ruled until 1886, when he was deposed in favor of his brother. Disliked for his extravagance and his homosexuality, he died soon after under very mysterious circumstances. This type struck 1874-76 is common.

Recorded mintage: 615,338 plus proofs.

Specification: 7.96 g, 0.900 fine gold, .115 troy oz AGW, this specimen 7.97 g.
