Sedwick sale 12, lot 1410
from the Mountain Groan Collection
Ecuador 1838 2 reales rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen was lot 1410 in Sedwick sale 12 (Winter Park, FL, October 2012), where it sold for $206.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Quito, Ecuador, 2 reales, 1838ST, rare. Broad-flan VF with weak centers, traces of muted luster, very light toning, much rarer than assayer MV for this year." This specimen is one of a series struck 1836-41. It is scarce, but not rare. It varies from the later type (KM 21, struck 1837-38) in having the obverse and reverse legends transposed. It is lightweight and debased, similar to the infamous Bolivian two reales of 1830. All pre-decimal Ecuadorian coinage is hard to find and hotly pursued.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.

Specification: 5.5-6.05 g, 0.667 fine silver, this specimen 5.6 grams.

Catalog reference: KM-18.
