Sincona sale 95, lot 4705

This specimen was lot 4705 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$1,941 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Stadt und Kanton, Halbtaler 1773, Zürich. Variante mit Kopf des Löwen nach links. Fast FDC. Justiert. (Switzerland, canton of Zürich, half thaler of 1773, Zürich mint, variety with lion's head left. About Mint State, Adjustment marks.)"

The half thalers of 1773 come in three varieties: KM 155 (the rare "Gessner" half thaler), KM 156 (lion facing right) and KM 157 (lion facing left, shown here).

Specification: 14 g, silver, 33 mm diameter, this specimen 13.20 g.
