Zurich 1773 1/2 thaler KM-156
This specimen was lot 4195 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$1,885 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Halbtaler 1773, Zürich. Vorderseitenstempel wie Gessner-Halbtaler mit zurückblickendem Löwen nach rechts. Rv. Reiche Barockeinfassung, Schrift und Jahreszahl in vier Zeilen. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast FDC. (Switzerland, canton of Zurich, half thaler of 1773, Zurich mint. Obverse: dies of the "Gessner" half thaler with lion looking to right; reverse: baroque cartouche with legend and date in four lines. Very rare in this condition, About uncirculated.)"
The SCWC notes three varieties of half thaler for 1773: KM 155 (sword and palm branch reverse), KM 156 (lion to right, shown here) and KM 157 (lion to left).
